I think that women shouldn’t fight their genetics and rather, work with it. That’s why I was tickled to discover Miss Monroe’s penchant for the iron.
I think this is the sort of message that needs to get out.

Ahem. Marilyn did not wear a size 12. She ranged from 2 to 6. She was a tiny girl.

I was going to ask you about that. Are you sure? Everyone swears she was much larger. Was a size 12 different back then? I have not found any info saying she is a size 2-6. But I have found plenty of 12’s.
I found this too:

I am sure. She was little, like only around 5′2″ or something. And I have read stuff by her wardrobe people that talked about having two wardrobes for her, one for when she was on her game, one for when she came back from a blow out weekend puffed up from too much imbibing, and she was never bigger than a 6.

I had alwasy believed that Marilyn wore a size 12 so here you go…
From Snopes.com (my favorite mythbusting site)
“So, what can we say with any certainty? We can at least establish a range of measurements for Marilyn Monroe based on the available sources:
Height: 5 feet, 5½ inches
Weight: 118-140 pounds
Bust: 35-37 inches
Waist: 22-23 inches
Hips: 35-36 inches
Bra size: 36D
A woman of Marilyn’s height, at the extreme of Marilyn’s weight range (140 lbs), would probably wear a size 12 dress today (which is the same dress size listed for Marilyn in the book The Unabridged Marilyn). Perhaps at one time she did wear dresses that might have been considered size 16 (or even 18) back in the 1950s, but she almost certainly did not wear dresses equivalent to today’s size 16. This is borne out by citings such as the following (which might also be a source of some confusion, as a British size 16 would be the equivalent of an American size 12):
[The Times, 1994]
Even the 1950s mannequin does not have a totally unattainable figure. She has a wasplike waist, but her shoulders and hips are femininely broad. She resembles that universal sexual icon, Marilyn Monroe a dress of whose was recently auctioned and found to be a British size 16.

She was not 5′5″. She was about Stil’s size — Stil, how tall are you? And Stil is only wearing a size 6 because she has bulked up on purpose body building. I could ask my father, he knew her personally, but he and I do not really talk and I kind of do not want to do that just over Marilyn proportion stories. Plus he was a kid at the time and boy kids do not really notice dress sizes or height, ya know?
Mae West was a big girl. She got up to around 140 pounds. Marilyn was not. Look at the photos. That is not 140 Lbs. on a 5′2″ frame. That is not even 140 Lbs. on a 5′5″ frame. The whole PC feminist thing trying to proportion women in one category to attack and denounce advertising trends does not work. Every female body does not fit the same mold and trying to revise historical figures to imply it does will not equalize genders. Nothing based on half truths and speculation will.

“She was not 5′5″. She was about Stil’s size — Stil, how tall are you?”
5′5. According to my license
Seriously, about 5′4.
True, I’m naturally a size 2.
[Don't kill me]!
This would make a good post.
The debate continues…

:::whistling:::

Of course, Max seems to out-eat me.
Wait, that sounds gross. What I mean is – Max might be tiny but she sure can chow down at the restaurant!
November 8, 2007 at 8:35 pm |
In my teens it was a family joke at a dinner table I ate more than my father and my brother combined. I probably still do.
I will just keep whistling here to stop myself from questioning that 5′4″ quandary.
[You know there is no freaking way right? I am 5'6" including the hair and I was taller than you wearing sneakers when you were wearing heels.]
[Fuck, this whistling thing totally did not work.]
November 8, 2007 at 11:25 pm |
Honest to God, Max, I’m about 5′4. Maybe you are not 5′6. HahA!
“Weight: 118-140 pounds”
Wow – Marilyn would have been great at dieting down for competitions!
November 9, 2007 at 6:25 pm |
I am pretty sure i am 5′6″ on a tall day.
